5 Km Race Series & Interval Training

The SRRA's new initiative for SRRA members is nearing the end of its first year and continues to be very popular. Join the SRRA and join us Mondays!

Runners of all levels have been meeting every Monday at 6:30pm for interval training and monthly 5 Km timed races. The speed training sessions are designed specifically for half-marathon and marathon events. All levels - from beginner to advanced - are invited to attend and workouts specific to your level will be available.

Meet at the Mendel Art Gallery parking lot (south of the Gallery) for a 6:30pm start - please show up a little early. There is no cost to SRRA members for any of the Monday sessions - the workouts or the races. In fact, all participants must be SRRA members and this is therefore a great opportunity to take advantage of your SRRA membership.

The monthly timed 5 Km's will be held on the second Monday of each month. Runners in the monthly 5 Km races will be timed and the results will be posted on the SRRA website (Race Results tab). The races will give participants a great opportunity to gain experience, chart your progress, train for your next big event and meet and have fun with other runners. Everyone is welcome to meet after at the Mendel Gallery coffee shop for refreshments.

Monday Night Speedwork Sessions
Our philosophy for our speedwork sessions is simple. We want our members to have fun, to improve their running, and to enjoy speedwork in a group atmosphere. To make this work, we do need to organize participants into groups that are logical, where runners of like ability can participate together.

For now, we are designing our speed sessions using four groups. The groups are described below, based upon some general characteristics. Select the group that best suits your ability and try it out. You can always move up to another group as you improve.

Group A: You can run for 45 minutes at a pace of 5:30min/km, or 9:00min/mile, or slower. If you have tried a 10k race and your time is more than 55 minutes, this group may be for you. If you are new to running, this group may be your starting point.

Group B: You can run for 45 minutes at a pace somewhere between 5:00 and 5:30 min/per km (8 to 9 min/mile). Your 10k race times are somewhere between 48 and 55 minutes. You may not yet have entered a race, but have had some running experience.

Group C: You can run 45-60 minutes at a pace between 4:20 and 5:00 min/km (7-8 min/mile). Your 10k race time is likely between 42 and 48 minutes and your marathon times are between 3:30 and 4:00.

Group D: You are an experienced runner and can run under 42 minutes for a 10k, and faster than 3:30 for a marathon.

These are arbitrary groupings, but are meant to help you select what training group to participate in. As the weeks go by, you will find yourself getting faster and eventually may move into one of the faster groups.

Remember, SRRA members receive an email each week with a desription of the next speedwork session. Any questions, comments, or suggestions? Peter would like to hear from you.

Rules of the Race

Some useful race rules have been prepared by the Road Runners Club of America.  We thought we should borrow  them and post them here.  Please read them as they apply to most road races.

Volunteers Needed

All of the events put on by the Saskatoon Road Runners Association are a success because of the many people who volunteer in various capacities.

You don't have to be a runner and training will be provided.  To have someone contact you about volunteering for one of our events, please email us.
